That was a day of sore fingers and intense frustration, but the sense of pride is invaluable.

Artist Statement.

Balloonscapes is a series of images documenting the installation of balloons in various environments. The projects inception was an photograph I took of my Grandmother’s bedroom shortly after her death. Helium balloons brushed the ceiling, making a home above the bed and make shift shrine on her bed side cabinet. It was an image that resonates sentiment and loss, while remaining visually striking.

I set out to make images, trying to capture the majesty and atmosphere of this image while removing all meaning from the series. I wanted to make some thing that was a simply a visual spectacle, and nothing more. Allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions on the ‘meaning’.

After the fiasco of tying balloons down and balloons getting tangled together at the old shed, I decided to move my balloon party to this little rockery thing that was put into the park by my house about 10 years ago and is as far away from all the children as I could get… Something I did not anticipate was when children see balloons they want them, even from a mile away. I eventually had to bribe them out of the nearby trees and out of my way with the promise of a balloon when I was finished. Overall good shoot, a lot of waiting around for the sun to come out from behind the clouds… and the neighbors now think I’m insane. Maybe that’s what I should call the project, ‘what will the neighbors think’ since I’m stuck on a name. I know I don’t need one, but I like to name things.

Went on a little shoot today near my house, since the weather has been atrocious all week I didn’t want to venture too far… That didn’t stop me getting rained on though. I wanted to use some different locations for the balloons.. I feel like I’m running out of ideas for the project. Actually that’s a lie, I’m running out of feasible ideas for the project. I could work on this project for a lifetime and still have a hundred outrageous ideas. The time left to compete the project does have me in a small, little, mini PANIC!

However I shall press on… enjoy my balloon feast for your eyes.

Would that I could have a tank of helium in my possession everyday…

Photos from today’s prep for a shoot. The last time there was this many helium balloons in this room it was after my nanny died. I felt a little bit sad because she’s gone. But it’s a really nice memory of everyone getting a chance to say goodbye. We were all happy that day even though it was a sad time.
